Hello, my friend. Welcome back.
Last time, we walked together through the forests of the Great Lakes, and I watched something remarkable --- two men carrying a vision of peace so radical it seemed almost impossible. And yet it took root. It spread. And today that tree of peace has roots deep in the fabric of the world you live in, and the promise of tomorrow can be threaded all the way back to the meeting of those two men in a dark forest.
Today we stay in the same part of the world, more or less. No forests this time, no great councils under ancient trees. Just a young country, still finding its feet, still arguing about what it wanted to be.
And one woman, in the middle of all that noise, who simply decided to get to work.
Her name was Elizabeth. And she didn't set out to change anything. She just kept showing up, kept serving, kept building --- one small act at a time --- until the world around her was quietly, permanently different.
I love stories like this. I always have.
Come, sit with me a while. Let me tell you about her.
I want you to picture a morning in Maryland. Early autumn, 1810. The kind of morning where the air is cold enough to see your breath but the light is still gold and soft through the trees.
There is a small stone house at the edge of a field in a little valley called Emmitsburg. It isn't much to look at. The roof is low, the rooms are plain, and the floors are bare wood worn smooth by feet that have crossed them a thousand times.
Inside, a woman stands at the front of a room full of girls.
She is thin. She has the kind of face that has known both laughter and grief, and doesn't try to hide either. She is dressed simply, in black. And she is teaching.
Not philosophy. Not Latin. Not the ornamental accomplishments that wealthy families paid tutors to instill in their daughters. She is teaching these girls --- many of them poor, many of them the children of families who had nothing --- to read. To write. To think.
I was there, though no one saw me. I often linger in places like that. Quiet places. Places where something important is happening that no one has yet thought to call important.
That's the thing about history, you know. It almost never announces itself. There are no trumpets when the real work begins. No ceremonies. No crowd.
Just a woman. A room. A handful of children who deserved a chance.
I remember thinking --- standing there in that cold morning light --- that I had seen this before. Not this woman, not this room, but this moment. The moment when one person decides that the need in front of them is reason enough to act.
It always starts so small.
And it almost never stays that way.
Elizabeth Ann Bayley was born in New York City in 1774, two years before the revolution that would remake the world she grew up in. Her family was prosperous, educated, connected. Her father, Richard Bayley, was a respected physician --- a man of science and civic standing. It was a good beginning, by any measure.
She married young, as women did. William Magee Seton was a merchant, charming and well-regarded, and for a time their life together looked exactly as it was supposed to. A fine home in New York. Five children. A place in society.
Then everything began to unravel.
William's family business collapsed. Debt followed. Then illness --- tuberculosis, slow and merciless. In a desperate hope that the warmer climate of Italy might restore his health, Elizabeth sailed with him across the Atlantic in 1803, their eldest daughter Anna Maria beside them.
It didn't work.
William died in Pisa, in December of that year. Elizabeth was twenty-nine years old, in a foreign country, with a daughter at her side and four more children waiting at home. She had almost no money. She had no plan. She had, by the world's accounting, very little left at all.
What she did have --- and what I noticed, watching her in those weeks after William died --- was a kind of interior stillness. Not numbness. Not resignation. Something quieter and harder to name. As though the losses had burned away a certain kind of noise, and left her able to hear something she hadn't been able to hear before.
She returned to New York. And there, through the kindness of the Italian Catholic family who had sheltered her during William's final weeks, she found herself drawn toward the Catholic faith. It was not a simple thing --- conversion cost her dearly in social terms. Old friends pulled away. Doors that had been open closed. In the tight, Protestant world of New York society, her choice was seen as a kind of betrayal.
She bore it quietly. And she kept moving.
A priest in Baltimore, Father William DuBourg, had heard of her --- her intelligence, her faith, her gift for teaching. He invited her south. She went.
In Baltimore she opened a small school. Then, in 1809, she moved to Emmitsburg, and there, in that modest valley, she founded something that had never existed before in the United States --- a religious community of women dedicated to service. She called them the Sisters of Charity.
They ran schools. They cared for the poor. They took in children who had nowhere else to go. Elizabeth wrote their rules herself, adapting them from a French model, fitting them to the particular needs of a young and restless country that had more need than it knew how to meet.
She was thirty-five years old when she founded that community. She had buried a husband. She would go on to bury two of her daughters. She was often ill herself.
And still she worked.
That is the part I find myself returning to, every time I tell this story. Not the founding --- though that was remarkable. But the working. The daily, unglamorous, uncelebrated labor of building something out of almost nothing, with hands that had every reason to be too tired to try.
Let me tell you what America looked like in 1809.
It was a young country, loud with opinion and proud of its newness. It had just fought a revolution against old authority --- kings, hierarchies, inherited power. It was suspicious of anything that smelled like the old world. And the Catholic Church, to many American eyes, smelled very much like the old world indeed. Foreign. Hierarchical. Suspect.
Into that atmosphere, a widow from a good New York family had converted, founded a religious order, and was now running free schools for poor children in rural Maryland.
You can imagine the raised eyebrows.
But here is what I want you to notice --- because this is the part that matters. Elizabeth was not defiant about any of it. She was not making a political statement. She was not interested in winning arguments or changing minds about Catholicism or proving anything to the people who had turned their backs on her.
She was just serving.
That distinction is quieter than it sounds, but it runs very deep. There is a difference between doing good in order to be seen doing good, and doing good because the need is simply there and you have something to give. Elizabeth belonged entirely to the second kind. And people around her could feel it.
The women who joined her community --- and they came, slowly at first, then in greater numbers --- were not drawn by ideology. They were drawn by her. By the quality of her attention. By the way she moved through difficulty without bitterness. By the way she treated the children in her care as though each one of them mattered completely.
I watched her with those children. I want you to know that. I was there in the classrooms, in the cold corridors of that stone house, and I watched how she looked at them --- the poor ones especially, the ones who had been told in a hundred quiet ways that they were less important than other people. She didn't look at them that way. Not even slightly.
She looked at them the way you look at something precious.
And that, in a society that sorted people by birth and wealth and denomination almost as naturally as it breathed, was its own kind of radicalism.
There is a word that gets used a great deal and means less than it should --- the word vocation. Calling. It comes from the Latin, vocare, to call. The idea that some people are not merely choosing a profession but responding to something that has chosen them first.
Elizabeth understood this from the inside. Service was not her strategy. It was not her path to respectability or influence or a place in history. It was simply what she was for. The losses --- and there were so many losses --- had not defeated that sense of purpose. If anything, they had clarified it. Stripped away the things that didn't matter. Left her standing in that cold classroom with absolute certainty about the one thing that did.
I have lived a very long time. I have seen a great many people respond to suffering by closing. By hardening. By deciding that the world owed them something it was never going to pay.
And I have seen others --- not many, but enough --- who somehow went the other direction. Who came out of grief more open than they went in. More tender. More ready.
Elizabeth was one of those.
And the people around her knew it, even when they couldn't quite explain what they were sensing.
Here is a number I want you to hold for a moment.
Nearly five thousand.
That is roughly how many Catholic schools exist in the United States today. They educate close to two million children. And the system --- the idea that a religious community could and should build schools for ordinary families, for poor families, for immigrant families who arrived with nothing and needed somewhere to send their children --- that idea traces a direct line back to a stone farmhouse in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and a thin woman in a black dress who decided that children deserved to learn.
Elizabeth Seton did not build five thousand schools. She built one. Maybe two, before she died in 1821 at the age of forty-six.
But she built the pattern. And patterns, once established, have a life of their own.
The Sisters of Charity spread. First through Maryland, then through New York, Philadelphia, Cincinnati. Wherever they went, they opened schools. They opened orphanages. They opened hospitals. They did the work that governments had not yet thought to do, and that markets had no interest in doing, because the people who needed it most had nothing to offer in return.
I want to pause on that for a moment, because I think it is easy to let it slip past without feeling its full weight.
The children Elizabeth taught in those early years were not the children of influence. They were not the sons and daughters of people who could reward her with money or status or favorable opinion. They were the children of families that the young republic had not yet figured out how to care about. And she cared about them anyway. Systematically. Institutionally. In a way that would outlast her by centuries.
That is a particular kind of spiritual contribution --- not the dramatic kind, not the kind that makes for vivid paintings or heroic statues, but the kind that quietly reorganizes what a society believes it owes to its most vulnerable members.
I have seen it happen across many centuries and many cultures, and it always begins the same way. One person. A clear eye. A willingness to treat the need in front of them as a genuine claim on their energy and time. And then --- if they are stubborn enough, faithful enough, and fortunate enough to find others who share the vision --- something institutional begins to form around that original act of service.
Institutions are strange things. They can calcify. They can lose the spirit that founded them and become mere machinery. But the good ones carry something forward that the founder could not have carried alone --- a set of habits, a culture of care, a daily practice of showing up for people who need showing up for.
Elizabeth gave America a model for that. Not just a school, but a way of thinking about what schools are for. Not just an orphanage, but a way of thinking about what a community owes its children. Not just a hospital, but a way of thinking about who deserves to be healed.
And here is the quiet thread running beneath all of it --- the thing I noticed then and notice still. It was never about the institution for her. The institution was just the vessel. What she was actually transmitting, through every school and every classroom and every child she looked at as though they were precious, was a conviction.
That every soul matters.
That service is not charity in the condescending sense --- not the powerful stooping to assist the weak --- but something more like recognition. Seeing another person fully, and responding to what you see.
She planted that conviction in the women who worked beside her. They planted it in the communities they served. And something of it is still growing, still spreading, still quietly insisting --- in schools and hospitals and shelters across a continent --- that the measure of a society is how it treats the ones who need it most.
Elizabeth Seton died young, worn out by illness and work and grief. She did not see what grew from what she planted.
She rarely does, I find. That kind of person rarely does.
But I have seen it. And I want you to know --- it is something worth seeing.
I want to ask you something.
When something goes wrong in the world --- when you see a need that isn't being met, a gap that is opening up in your community, a group of people who are falling through --- what are the first two answers that come to mind?
I'll tell you what I hear, again and again, across centuries of human argument. The government should handle it. Or: the market will sort it out.
Those are the two levers we have learned to reach for. And they are real levers. They move real things. I am not dismissing them.
But I have lived long enough to know that they are not the only levers. And a society that forgets that is a society that has quietly lost something it may not even be able to name.
There has always been a third option. Not a backup plan. Not a temporary measure while the real institutions get around to it. Something older than governments and older than markets, and in some ways more fundamental than either.
People. In specific places. Seeing specific needs. And responding --- not because policy requires it, not because there is profit in it, but because the need is there and they have something to give.
That is a different logic entirely. And it does things the other two cannot do.
Here is why. Government works through scale. It writes rules that apply everywhere, to everyone, because that is the only way it can function. That is its strength --- and its limitation. It cannot see the particular. It cannot respond to what is specific and local and human in the way that a neighbor can. A market works through exchange. It follows incentive with extraordinary efficiency. But it goes where the return is. And the people who need the most help are very often the people who have the least to offer in return.
Neither of these is a moral failing. It is simply the nature of the instrument.
But some human needs can only be met by someone who shows up. Who sees not a category, not a data point, not a funding priority --- but a person. A child who needs to learn to read. A family that needs somewhere to turn. A community that needs someone to simply be present in it, paying attention, caring about what happens there.
That quality of attention --- I want to be careful here, because I mean something precise --- that quality cannot be legislated into existence. It cannot be incentivized into existence. It has to be chosen. Freely. From something inside the person who chooses it.
Elizabeth Seton chose it. And she was not alone then, and she is not alone now.
Look around you. I mean that literally --- look at the actual texture of the community you live in. The food bank run by volunteers who show up every Saturday because they know the families who come through the door. The literacy program started by one retired teacher who couldn't stop noticing that some of the kids in her neighborhood couldn't read well enough to navigate the world. The community garden on the empty lot. The mutual aid network that started as a group chat between three neighbors during a hard winter and somehow never stopped.
These are not footnotes. They are not charming but ultimately minor expressions of civic sentiment. They are part of the load-bearing structure of a functioning human society. They always have been. Long before there were governments sophisticated enough to address human need, and long before there were markets wealthy enough to be asked to, there were people doing this work. Quietly. Locally. Because they could see what needed doing and they were standing close enough to do it.
And here is what I most want you to hear.
The impulse that drives this work does not need to be invented. It is already there --- in people, in communities, in the ordinary human instinct to respond when someone near you is struggling. It doesn't need to be installed by a program or mandated by a law. It needs something simpler and more important than either of those things.
It needs to be honored.
A society that makes room for this impulse --- that trusts ordinary people to see real needs and respond to them, that doesn't crowd out local initiative with the assumption that only credentialed institutions can be trusted with human welfare --- that society is building something. Something resilient. Something that can flex and respond and adapt in ways that no centralized system ever quite manages.
A society that forgets this --- that reduces every question of human need to a debate between government and market, that treats the third option as naive or inefficient or merely sentimental --- that society is quietly dismantling part of its own foundation. And it may not notice until something needs to bear weight and the beam is gone.
Elizabeth didn't wait for permission. She didn't draft a proposal or conduct a feasibility study or wait for the right political moment. She saw children who needed to learn, in the place where she was standing, and she taught them. That's all. That specific, local, unglamorous act of response has been rippling outward for two hundred years.
I suspect you know someone living that same impulse right now. Maybe in a small way. Maybe in a way that nobody has thought to call important yet.
I have seen how these things grow.
Trust it.
I want to leave you with a question. Not a hard one. A gentle one.
Is there something you can see?
I don't mean in some grand, visionary sense. I mean something small and specific and close. A need in your neighborhood, your workplace, your family, your community that you keep noticing --- that you have perhaps been noticing for a long time --- and that nobody else seems to be doing anything about.
There is something particular about the things we keep noticing. I have watched people long enough to believe that it is not entirely random. The need you cannot stop seeing, the problem that keeps snagging your attention, the gap that quietly bothers you every time you drive past it or hear about it or think about the people caught in it --- that noticing is not nothing.
Elizabeth Seton lost almost everything the world told her she was supposed to want. And on the other side of that loss, she found she could see very clearly. One thing, in one place, that she could actually do.
She did it.
I am not suggesting your life needs to look like hers. It doesn't. Most lives of genuine service are far quieter than hers, and no less real for that. A single child taught well. A single neighbor genuinely helped. A single small thing built with care and kept running with patience.
These matter. I promise you they matter.
So I'll ask you again, gently.

High in the Andes mountains of Peru, above the Sacred Valley of the Incas, there is a place called Moray. And when you first see it, you will stop. I promise you that.
It is a series of enormous circular terraces, cut into the earth in concentric rings, descending deep into the ground like a great green amphitheater built for no audience anyone can name. The Inca built it. And to this day, no one is entirely certain what it was for.
But the leading theory --- the one that quietly delights me every time I think about it --- is that it was a laboratory. A place where the Inca experimented with growing things. Where they studied what seeds needed, what conditions produced life, what small adjustments of soil and temperature and altitude could coax something fragile into flourishing.
A civilization, at the height of its power, building a place devoted entirely to the patient, humble work of learning how things grow.
I think Elizabeth would have understood that impulse completely.
We will go there together, next time. I think you will find it worth the trip.
But for now --- sit with Elizabeth a little longer if you like. Sit with the image of that cold morning in Emmitsburg, and the woman in the black dress, and the children who deserved a chance. Sit with the quiet, radical idea that the most important work is often the work that looks the least like history being made.
And remember --- the things you plant in small places can grow beyond anything you can imagine.
